Dry skin needs water and a way to retain it

The outer skin acts as a barrier between the body and the environment. When that barrier is less effective, water can escape more readily and the surface may become dry, rough or tight. In eczema, barrier changes interact with inflammation, so moisturization and medical treatment may both be needed.

A moisturizer can address dryness through several complementary functions. Humectants attract water, occlusive ingredients help reduce its loss, and emollient ingredients soften the feel of the surface. The finished formula matters, including whether you tolerate it and will use it consistently.

Glycerin attracts moisture into the outer skin

Glycerin is a humectant. In a moisturizer, it helps attract water into the outer layers of skin. This function is useful for hydration, particularly when paired with ingredients that help keep that water from evaporating too quickly.

An ingredient’s role does not establish how long a particular product will work for every person. Washing, weather, the amount applied and the condition of the skin all affect how it feels over the day. Reapply when dry areas need moisture.

Petrolatum helps limit moisture loss

Petrolatum forms a protective layer on the skin’s surface that helps reduce water loss. It complements glycerin’s water-attracting role. Applying cream after washing, while the skin is still slightly damp, puts these functions into a practical routine.

This surface support should not be confused with curing eczema or treating an infection. If inflammation remains active, adding more moisturizer may not be enough. Follow the treatment plan for the underlying condition.

The remaining ingredients make a usable cream

Cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol are fatty alcohols used for texture and skin feel. They are different from drying ethanol. Ingredients such as glyceryl stearate citrate help water and oil components remain blended, while preservatives help protect the formula during normal use.

The cream also contains dipotassium glycyrrhizate, a licorice-derived skin-conditioning ingredient. Its presence does not mean the product is a prescription anti-inflammatory or that studies of other licorice preparations establish this cream’s clinical effect.

The current cream ingredient list does not contain oatmeal, aloe, apple extract or panthenol. Review the actual label instead of carrying assumptions from a different product into your purchase.

Fragrance-free supports a simpler selection process

The cream is made without added fragrance or dyes. Avoiding fragrance can be useful for sensitive skin, although no formula can guarantee freedom from an individual reaction. If you have a diagnosed ingredient allergy, check the full list before use.
